For the first season since 2020–21, Rangers are witnessing what happens when a football team has three strikers to pick from.
Despite competing every few days, the manager has been managed to rotate, pair them together, and keep all three of his key forwards in his squad fresh, even though Danilo may be out for the time being due to injury.
Cyriel Dessers appeared to be departing Rangers at the end of 2024, and his agency gave an explanation for why the 30-year-old is still at Ibrox.
Many offers were made to Cyriel Dessers to leave Rangers. Recently, Philippe Clement has been a staunch supporter of Dessers, and with good reason. Even in games where he hasn’t scored, the Rangers No. 9 has displayed some of his greatest play while wearing a Light Blue jersey.
His movement outside the box and link-up play against Ross County were as strong as ever; a goal was the only thing lacking. This is ironically one of the reasons Cagliari chose not to pursue Dessers, as there are doubts about his general play. He had plenty of offers because there was nothing wrong with his numbers:
Although clubs are pushing much less, there is still a lot of probing. In an interview with Sporza, Stijn Francis said, “Look at Cyriel Dessers: he had ten offers, but the market is much more difficult at that time.” Rangers only wanted to sell, but many wanted to rent him. Additionally, that is not the best for the player’s concentration.
Was it appropriate for the Rangers to hang onto Dessers?
Even though Rangers haven’t really received any transfer fees, they are justified in holding out because money has been saved elsewhere. Dessers’ issue was that he never contributed much when he wasn’t scoring goals.
All of that has changed as a result of Clement’s little system modification. He has obviously been impacted by having to watch Danilo and Igamane from the sidelines.
Dessers’ income can almost be digested a bit better when viewed as part of a group of three rather than just on his own, especially considering that the Moroccan international doesn’t have a large salary—a estimated £7,200 per week.
Rangers are rumored to be seeking £3.35 million for his sale, which would free up funds to replace him and make room on the salary bill. Just in case, Nils Koppen ought to have the next Igamane ready.
