Luka Doncic had some fun on Tuesday at the expense of his new head coach, JJ Redick.
The newest Los Angeles Lakers player held his first press conference ahead of the team’s road game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Years before Doncic became coach Redick’s preferred offensive weapon, the two played together briefly for the Dallas Mavericks. The Slovenian superstar was asked about his connection with Redick as a teammate.
“First of all, he couldn’t move at all,” Doncic recalled with a smile. “So, it wasn’t really [much].”
After his humorous jibe, Doncic explained how much he admires the Duke alum.
“No, but it was a great relationship. I genuinely respect him. You don’t see me on podcasts. I appeared on his program twice, so you know how much I admire him. “I’m really excited to play for him,” Doncic stated.
Following Redick’s move to the Mavericks in the middle of the 2020-21 season, the two played together. The veteran sharpshooter appeared in 13 games for Dallas, averaging 4.4 points on 35.8% shooting from the field.
Doncic, then in his third NBA season, was just beginning to establish himself as a superstar. During his year on the floor with his new Lakers coach, he averaged 27.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.6 assists.
Redick did not immediately announce his retirement at the end of the 2020-21 season, leaving his options open to sign with a team the following season. Redick later retired and focused on expanding his successful “Old Man and the Three” podcast, which Doncic proudly appeared on twice.
