Early Life and Education

Bayo Onanuga was born on June 20, 1957, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. He belongs to the Anikilaya Ruling House. He started his primary education at Moslem Primary School, Ijebu-Ode, from 1962 to 1969. He then attended Muslim College Ijebu Ode, graduating in 1974 with a Grade One. He furthered his studies at the Federal Government College, Odogbolu, for his A-Level from 1975 to 1977. Onanuga attended the University of Lagos, where he studied Mass Communication and graduated in 1980 with a second class upper degree.

Career

Bayo Onanuga began his career at Practions Partners in early 1982 and later joined Ogun State Television as a pioneer staff in June 1982. He moved to The Guardian in Lagos as a sub-editor in July 1983 but left 17 months later to start Weekly Titbits. When this venture failed, he joined the National Concord in January 1985 as a senior features writer and later transferred to the African Concord magazine, where he served as the international editor and later editor.

In 1992, Onanuga resigned from Concord after refusing to apologize to the military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, over a controversial cover story. This event led to the closure of the Concord Group by the military government. In February 1993, he co-founded TheNews Magazine with colleagues including Seye Kehinde, Dapo Olorunyomi, Sani Kabir, Idowu Obasa, Babafemi Ojudu, and Kunle Ajibade. After TheNews was shut down by the military government, the group launched TEMPO magazine and later P.M. NEWS in 1994.

Onanuga was appointed the managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2016. In October 2023, he was appointed as the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
