The Los Angeles Lakers continue to swing ahead of the 2025 NBA trade deadline. Following the acquisition of Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks, general manager Rob Pelinka addressed the team’s most pressing needs.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning that the Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement with the Charlotte Hornets to acquire big Mark Williams.
Charlotte selected Williams, who is having a breakout season, with the 15th choice in the 2022 NBA Draft. He’ll be the team’s starting center and brings a skill set that complements Dončić and LeBron James.
While the deal generated a lot of social media discussion, one component of the trade details surprised NBA fans. In comparison to what the Lakers sent the Mavericks to obtain Dončić.
According to Charania, the Lakers sent rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick exchange to the Hornets for Williams.
The Lakers included more draft capital in their agreement with the Hornets for Williams than they needed to acquire Dončić. In exchange for Anthony Davis and Max Christie, the Mavericks only acquired the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick.
Fans’ reactions, unsurprisingly, were not disappointing.
